Jamii Centers

SWAP in partnership with Procter & Gamble and Population Service International have established Jamii Centres in Ahero (Nyando district) and Nyakwere (Rachuonyo North district) with an aim of improving the health and development of babies, children and families in the community by increasing access to health products and information about health topics and healthy habits. The Community Health Promoters have also been trained to become self sustainable by generating income through sales of health products and thereby increasing individual entrepreneurs profit.

A new center was recently opened in Homa Bay County,Yala and Wagai (both in Siaya County).SWAP has also opened a distribution center in Mumias, from where the products are being distributed to traders in surrounding areas.

SWAP Model Village

SWAP acquired land at Ahero, about 100 meters from the Nyando River to put up a model village which is intended to showcase the interventions that SWAP deals with in the community. These include; Safe Water system products, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), improved traditional kitchen and Jamii Centers. Inside the SMV the sky hydrant was installed with funding and support from Janivo foundation, Aquaya Institute, Global Water challenge, Proctor and Gamble, IPA among other private well-wishers. The system draws water from the river using a fuel powered pump. The water is purified and then sold to the community at very low cost.
The center has a community library which is used by different partners for meetings including the Ministry of Health.The model village receives a lot of visitors from all over the world and on one such occassions the Dutch Ambassador toured the facility and planted a tree.The center also has trainings and health education, clean toilet with a handwashing facility for demonstration. Solar has been installed to provide for electricity and outside there is a chlorine dispenser to chlorinate the water.
